"Children starting school right now will be retiring in 2065. Nobody has a clue what the world will look like in 5 years time and yet we are meant to be educating them for it." Looking back on my father's generation of schooling compared to mine compared to my children's the change is substantial. This idea of Sir Robin's that we have no clue what we are educating children for isn't completely accurate though. We know a fair amount. Preparing them for the future entails teaching them how to think not what to think.

"All kids have tremendous talents and we squander them, ruthlessly. Creativity is as important as literacy and we should treat them with the same status" I have heard this talk a number of times and I agree wholeheartedly. I've noticed though in my own children's education that they have an immense amount of outlet for creativity, more than I had as a kid. This is due in part to the funding of the schools. I am lucky to be in a place where they value hand-making skills, singing, sewing, cooking and ample times nature.

I love Ken's humor. The humor he threads throughout his entire talk have helped to make this TED talk one of the most viewed on the TED platform. Plus is message is fantastically important. I wonder how much this talk inspired the A to be added to STEM making it STEAM and including art in the core standards.

"Kids will take a chance, if they don't know they will have a go. They aren't frightened of being wrong. Being wrong isn't' the same thing as being creative. If you are not prepared to be wrong you will not come up with anything original. By the time kids become adults they have lost the capacity. They have become afraid of being wrong. We run our companies the same way. We are educating people out of their creative capacities" This reminds me of a book I have read a number of time, The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking by Berger and Starbird. The majority of the book focuses on this very topic. Being wrong means you haven't gotten it right yet.

"Everywhere on earth is the same hierarchy. First is mathematics then languages then humanities and on the bottom is the arts. Within the arts, art and music have a higher status than drama and dance. No education system teaches dance every day like we do mathematics. As children grow up we educate them from the waist up, focusing on their heads and slightly to one side". This is true but not completely. Physical education is a major part of my students education. Recess time is also frequent where the kids can run and move. More emphasis is given to sports in general than dance in particular. Many girls take dance classes as extracurricular activities though, and I myself took dance for 3 years during my highschool years. In Germany it is common for a group of high school students to take ballroom dancing as an extracurricular activity. But I do agree with Ken, more dancing is fine with me.

"We know three things about intelligence. One, it's diverse. We think about the world in all the ways that we experience it. We think visually, we think in sound, we think kinesthetically." This reminds me of this Big Think interview with Howard Gardner. He lists 10 different intelligences: Linguistics, Mathematics, Music, spatial intelligence, kinesthetic intelligence (whole body and fine hand motor skills), Interpersonal intelligence (leading, cooperating, selling), Intrapersonal intelligence (knowledge of self) Natural intelligence (understanding nature), Teaching intelligence and existential intelligence (philosophical). https://curiosity.com/paths/8-intelligences-are-you-a-jack-of-all-trades-or-a-master-of-one-with-howard-gardner-big-think/?ref=shv
